"COMMUNICATION AND (RE) MAKING SOCIAL WORLDS"
(Communication-2006)

PANEL PROPOSAL 3

DISCUSSION FORUM: COMMUNICATION THEORY AS A FIELD

Presenter: Robert T. Craig, University of Colorado at Boulder

Abstract:

Although it draws on ancient as well as modern intellectual traditions, communication theory has only recently been recognized as a distinct field of study. This session will provide an opportunity for interested scholars to discuss their views on the field of communication theory with regard to its philosophical rationale, current status, and directions for future development.

As background for the discussion, participants may wish to read the article, “Communication Theory as a Field” by Robert T. Craig, which has been published both in English (1999)
http://comm.colorado.edu/craig/Craig-1999-CTasaField.PDF

and in Russian translation (2003)
http://comm.colorado.edu/craig/Craig-2003-CTasaField(Russian).PDF

and may be downloaded in PDF format from links on this page or requested by email to Robert.Craig@Colorado.edu. The session will open with a brief presentation by Professor Craig, followed by general discussion.
